TERRA NOVA YACHT CLUB

 FALL NEWSLETTER

10 Sept 2004

Lift-out Days are scheduled for Saturday October 09th 16th and Sunday October 10th 17th 2004. With the increasing number of boats it is important to get an early start so members are asked to show up early, 7:00 a.m., and be all ready to go. Mast lift out will begin on Friday 08th 15th October at noon.

We shall attempt to get as many masts as possible out then so we can get a flying start on Sat. The tides are perfect for these three days.

Our Treasurer, Ralph Fagan will be there to accept your money.  It is suggested you bring your chequebook or as close to the correct amount as possible with small bills.  The fees are as follows:  Please Note the change from previous years.  There will be no separate fees for Cradle or wash. These will be incorporated in the Lift Out Crane Fee which will be increased by $0.50 per foot.  The reason for this is to simplify the accounting process.  Overall costs will be minimally affected, if at all.

Boat lift-out Crane Fee                       $ 3.50 per foot based on LOA

Mast Lifting Fee                                  $ 15.00 for boats less than 25’

              $ 30.00 for boats of or more than 25’

Cradle Fee                                            $zero  (abolished)

Security Fee                                         $ 50.00 if wintered on TNYC property

High pressure wash                             $zero  (abolished)

 The following is an example of the lift-out cost to a regular member with a 27’ boat stored at TNYC for the winter.

            Length 27’ X $3.50                =          $ 94.50

Cradle                                     =          $ 0.00

Removing Mast                     =          $ 30.00

Security                                  =          $ 50.00

High pressure wash               =            $ 0.00

TOTAL                                   =         $174.50

Note: This amounts to $6.50 less than with the previous fee schedule.

Before members’ boats are lifted out, all outstanding fees must be paid in full, as well as the lift-out fees.

Again this year the Social Committee will be selling goodies for the hungry boat owners.  Details to follow.

LIFTING OPERATIONS

Safety Program

The primary goal of our Lift-out Operation this fall will be the safety of the club members and to ensure no boats are damaged in any way.  Members are encouraged to pay particular attention to the safety rules and strictly adhere to them.  Please keep a keen eye on your surroundings and we ask members not directly involved in the operation to keep clear.

Site Rules

Again during Lift-out the Club will be using teams as was utilized during the Spring Lift-in Operation.  These teams will be for boat lift-out as well as for removing masts and mast movement.  This is part of a process of ensuring safety as well as smoothness in operation.  There will be a requirement for all team members to wear the proper safety equipment.  If you are not identified on the team list this does not mean that you cannot assist as a rotation will be required throughout the day.    Please see Team list at the end of the newsletter.

Team members are requested to follow the direction of the Team Leader or his alternate, the roles of these people is safety first and smoothness of the operation throughout.

When boats are being lifted overhead, the potential for serious injury in the case of an accidental drop is quite high and members who are not directly involved in the lifting operation are asked to give the site a wide safety margin.

Being Ready

Your responsibility as a boat owner is to have your boat ready for lift-out.  Being ready is an important contribution to a successful Lift-Out day.   We have to work around the tides and if members are not ready when it is time to lift their boat or remove their mast it could seriously impede the flow of the entire operation.     In addition to delaying lift-out, it will add to the cost of lift-out. Owners are expected to be on-site at the commencement of the operation.

Cradle Inspection

As part of the lift-out process members are requested to inspect their cradles checking to confirm that it is ready to secure your boat.  Should your cradle not be ready, it could slow down the lift-out process.  Thus increasing the overall cost.  Should your boat fall from a poorly maintained cradle, it could impact other members.  Suggest that you check the following items:

·        Check the overall condition of your cradle and repair any broken pieces.

·        Ensuring resting bunks are in good shape and ready for the load.

·        Ensure the cradle is properly levelled a few days prior to lift-out.

·        Ensure you have all equipment such as blocks and wedges ready for lift-out.

Removing Mast

Arrangements are being made to have the boom truck on site for part of the day on Friday for members who may be available to have their mast removed.  Thus reducing the numbers of masts requiring to be moved on Saturday.

Boat Storage (new)

If you have some special maintenance planned during the Fall and Winter seasons, please contact the Wharf Chairman prior to lift-out to discuss your boat storage requirements.  In addition, if anyone is certain that his/her boat will not be lifted in next (2005) spring, please inform Steve Decker so that appropriate storage can be arranged.

Mast Storage (new)

Club members are strongly urged to utilize the mast storage racks provided rather than placing the mast on the boats.  This suggestion is mainly because of the additional space requirements and reduces the cost of lifting the boat. We have moved the storage racks to a more convenient and accessible location.

Should members have questions regarding the information in the Fall Newsletter, feel free to speak to any member of the Executive for clarification.

See you all bright and early on Lift-Out Day!!

 Remember 07:00 a.m. Saturday 09th 16th October 2004

Boat Insurance

Liability/third party insurance is required for all club members’ boats. Please ensure that your insurance is in place and up-to-date. Proof of insurance may be required before next lift-in.

Lift Out Teams

As in the past two years, there will be lift-out teams, each with a team leader and an alternative. The list will be sent out as soon as I get it from the Lift-out leader. Again, there will be no safety officer per se, but each member is urged to act as safety officer, by identifying any potential hazards, and bringing them to the attention of the “liftmeister.”

Fall General Meeting

Club members are advised that the regular Fall General Meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, November 7th, 2004 at the clubhouse.  All members are encouraged to attend.

New Boat Purchase

Members are advised that, when planning to purchase a larger boat, consideration should be given for the potential need for larger berthing space. This may mean having to join the waiting list for berths.

That’s all for now. Details of Christmas Party and other social events will follow.

Secretary.
