Dan has prepared a list of "Do’s and Don’ts" for lift in, as noted below, and has put together a lift-in team to ensure safety.
Lift-in Operations
Safety First
The primary goal of any operation is safety. Due to the growing size of our club lift in operations as well as lift out are large events with many people moving freely around the work site. This sometimes brings on safety concerns. During lift in please be careful as any one individual member or person could come into a danger situation. Please keep a keen eye out for all and where possible we ask members not involved please keep clear.
Safety Officer.
The executive have decided that, instead of appointing one safety officer, we urge each member to take responsibility for his/her safety and the safety of all others involved in the operation – see above.
TEAM CONCEPT
This year, same as last year, the Club Executive has decided to setup various teams. These teams will be for launch as well as mast placement and mast movement. Each Team leader will direct the group in their operation. This is part of a process of ensuring safety as well as smoothness in operation. There will be a requirement for all team members to wear the proper safety equipment. If you are not part of the team in the early process, it does not mean you’re not required. Rotation will take place throughout the day. A list of team members is attached.
Safety equipment is to be worn when in the work area or lift site by all involved.
Being ready for launch is KEY
Your responsibility as an owner is to have your boat ready for launch. It also reflects your contribution to a successful launch day. All owners are expected to be on site at the start of the program. This means that all and any concerns should have been dealt with well before launch day, including engine checks and all through hull valves or transducers. As tide does not wait and the lift in is setup around tide to maximize the high water, please ensure your vessel is ready to enter the water when the lift boss calls for your boat. Not being ready could mean we would have a delay in our operation. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but ask early.
Placement of your Mast
When you are asked to get ready for the placement of your mast, please ensure you are ready. Please inspect all aspects of your mast from Windex to shrouds, as well as all upper fittings, making sure all are in place, secured, and not tangled. Once this is done, make sure you have all your deck fittings ready, which include pins and turn buckles are out and ready for assembly. Having the right wrench is key as well. Once this is your case, you’re ready to roll. Then and only then should you tell the mast team that you’re ready to go! Remember, being ready keeps the program moving smoothly as well as safely.
Also, please remember that your mast has to be moved off the rack and the spreaders put back on prior to placement. This activity will be coordinated with the boats as lifted in order to avoid congestion on the roadway.
Everyone is expected to be ready when it is time to go, so please ensure that your engine is ready to run, all of your through hulls are closed and hoses properly connected. Yes, there is a prize for sinking at the dock, but why bother? Fred will outdo you later in the season!
Steve Decker has taken over the oft-thankless task of wharf convener. Every effort has been made to maximize space and provide everyone with the appropriate berth space for the size of his or her boat. Changes made will be kept to a minimum and are only undertaken as a necessity. If you are affected, your understanding and cooperation is appreciated. Over the summer, cradles will be left in situ wherever possible. Exceptions would be those cradles which require to be moved for lift-in purposes.
Additionally, some members of the executive will be marking boats fore and aft at the cradle points. Small tape patches will be used. Please don’t remove them.
Ensure your dock lines/mooring lines are set and safe before launch time.
Finally, please let Steve Decker know a.s.a.p. if you intend to keep your boat onshore over the sailing season.
Have a safe, enjoyable and happy season!
That’s all for now folks.
