TERRA NOVA YACHT CLUB

SPRING NEWSLETTER

2005

Spring AGM is scheduled for Sunday April 3 2005, 1400 Hrs. at the clubhouse.  Clocks will have been put forward the evening before.

Election of officers to fill vacancies in the Executive will take place.  As there is likely to be discussion of the role of HMPC, it is hoped that everyone will be able to attend.  Other topics will include mandatory boat insurance and wharf maintenance.

Lift-in is scheduled for Saturday May 14th 2005. With the increasing number of boats it is important to get an early start so members are asked to show up early, 7:00 a.m., and be all ready to go. It is possible that some masts may be moved prior to that date but I shall update this later. This week-end gives us the best tides with a small differential between high and low marks.

Our Treasurer, Ralph Fagan will be there to accept your money.  It is suggested you bring your chequebook or as close to the correct amount as possible with small bills.  As most are aware, the fee structure changed last year. The new structure is summarised below. In addition, there will be a nominal fee of $5.00, which will be paid to HMPC.

Boat lift-in Crane Fee                       $ 3.50 per foot based on LOA

Mast Lifting Fee                                $ 15.00 for boats less than 25’

$ 30.00 for boats of or more than 25’

Cradle Fee                                        $zero  (abolished)

Security Fee                                     $ 50.00 if wintered on TNYC property

High pressure wash                         $zero  (abolished)

The following is an example of the lift-in cost to a regular member with a 27’ boat stored at TNYC for the winter.

            Length 27’ X $3.50               =          $ 94.50

Cradle                                    =          $ 0.00

Handling Mast                       =          $ 30.00

HMPC fee                              =          $ 5.00

TOTAL                                    =          $129.50

Membership fees and wharf fees will remain unchanged.

Before members’ boats are lifted in, all outstanding fees must be paid in full, as well as the lift-in and membership fees.

Again this year the Social Committee will be serving lunch, good humour and encouragement for the hungry boat owners, at a very modest cost..  Details to follow.

LIFTING OPERATIONS

Safety Program

The primary goal of our Lift-in Operation this spring will be the safety of the club members and to ensure no boats or other property are damaged in any way.  Members are encouraged to pay particular attention to the safety rules and strictly adhere to them.  Please keep a keen eye on your surroundings and we ask members not directly involved in the operation to keep clear.

Site Rules

Again during Lift-in the Club will be using teams along the same lines as during the fall lift-out Operation.  These teams will be for boat lift-in as well as for moving masts and mast stepping.  This is part of a process of ensuring safety as well as smoothness in operation.  There will be a requirement for all team members to wear the proper safety equipment.  If you are not identified on the team list this does not mean that you cannot assist as a rotation will be required throughout the day.    Team lists will be published closer to lift-in date.

Team members are requested to follow the direction of the Team Leader or his alternate, the roles of these people is safety first and smoothness of the operation throughout.

When boats are being lifted overhead, the potential for serious injury in the case of an accidental drop is quite high and members who are not directly involved in the lifting operation are asked to give the site a wide safety margin.

Being ready for launch is KEY

Your responsibility as an owner is to have your boat ready for launch.  It also reflects your contribution to a successful launch day.  All owners are expected to be on site at the start of the program.  This means that all and any concerns should have been dealt with well before launch day, including engine checks and all through hull valves or transducers.  As tide does not wait and the lift in is setup around tide to maximize the high water, please ensure your vessel is ready to enter the water when the lift boss calls for your boat.  Not being ready could mean we would have a delay in our operation.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help, but ask early.

Placement of your Mast

When you are asked to get ready for the placement of your mast, please ensure you are ready.  Please inspect all aspects of your mast from Windex to shrouds, as well as all upper fittings, making sure all are in place, secured, and not tangled.  Once this is done, make sure you have all your deck fittings ready, which include pins and turn buckles are out and ready for assembly. Also, please remember that your mast has to be moved off the rack and the spreaders put back on prior to placement.  This activity will be coordinated with the boats as lifted in order to avoid congestion on the roadway Having the right wrench is key as well. Once this is your case, you’re ready to roll.  Then and only then should you tell the mast team that you’re ready to go!  Remember, being ready keeps the program moving smoothly as well as safely.

Your help is valued

The Team Work way of thinking provides light work with many hands. Therefore please stay and assist your neighbor.

Everyone is expected to be ready when it is time to go, so please ensure that your engine is ready to run, all of your through hulls are closed and hoses properly connected.

Boat Insurance

It is very likely (virtually guaranteed) that Liability/third party insurance will be required for all club members’ boats. Please ensure that your insurance is in place and up-to-date. Proof of insurance may be required before next lift-in.

Lift In Teams

As in the past two years, there will be lift-in teams, each with a team leader and an alternate. The list will be sent out as soon as I get it from the Lift-out leader. Again, there will be no safety officer per se, but each member is urged to act as safety officer, by identifying any potential hazards, and bringing them to the attention of the “lift master.”

New Boat Purchase

Members are advised that, when planning to purchase a larger boat, consideration should be given for the potential need for larger berthing space. This may mean having to join the waiting list for berths.
