Sailor magazine... AIRDECK INFLATABLES Airdeck boats have most of the advantages of RIB inflatables, but can be rolled up and stored in a space the size of a big duffle. We ran seven of them, with two different engines. HEADINGS: GET A "GRIP" ON THE WEATHER There are a couple of new satellite-based weather-reporting systems from The Weather Channel and XM that are worth looking at for onboard use. They're simpler to use than SSB/weatherfax, and the pictures are like what you see at home. Expensive, though. COMPUTER CHARTING SOFTWARE UPDATE Here are updated programs from Nobeltec and Fugawi, a powerful new one from Transas, imported from the commercial shipping world, and a much-needed "bridge-the-gap" program from C-Map. BARNACLE REMOVERS Prevention is by far the best way to deal with barnacles. Once they glue themselves on, they're a true pain to deal with. We tried two acid-based removers and a less effective but less toxic alternative. Also in this issue... Ship to Shore...Sailplan Balancing Act. In the May 15th issue... FEE-BASED WEATHER FORECASTS We signed up with three commercial forecaster/routers, as well as a well-known free-service forecaster, for a passage from New England to Bermuda. GLOBALSTAR SATELLITE PHONE Here's a report on what it was like to use Globalstar for voice communications (pretty good) and data transfer (not so good) last year in the eastern Bahamas. This company and system are in flux, but still stand to be a powerful sailor's ally. PORTABLE OIL CHANGERS Oil-changing on a diesel or gas auxiliary, or one of the new four-stroke outboards, isn't nearly as easy as dropping by Jiffy Lube. If you have someone else do it, it's expensive. If you do it yourself, you should own one of these changers. Also in this issue... The Resale Value of Repowering.
